Part P Testing - About Part P
According to Government statistics each year on average 10 people die and around 750 are seriously injured in accidents involving unsafe electrical installations in the home. To help the address the issue, the Government decided to introduce a new electrical safety requirement in the Building Regulations to enhance the safety of householders.
Requirement P is simply that 'Fixed electrical installations in dwellings shall be suitably designed, installed, inspected and tested so as to provide reasonable protection against their being the source of a fire or a cause of injury to persons.' The Law requires 'competent persons' to carry out such work, who are registered with one of the Government approved scheme operators such as NICEIC. Alternatively the installation must be notified to and approved by Building Control.
This requirement is limited to fixed electrical installations in dwellings and compliance with BS 7671 is a requirement.
Failure to comply with Part P is a criminal offence and local authorities have the power to require the removal or alteration of work that does not comply with the Building Regulations.
