Test Leads

There is no question non-fused test leads are lighter, smaller and much more convenient

to use than fused test leads BUT WARNING non-fused test leads can be lethal in some electrical testing situations.

Non-Fused Test Leads

This type of test lead is excellent for dead circuit

testing - Insulation and Continuity are good examples - provided you have confidence the tester in use (for example as in our Socket & See Insulation/Continuity testers) is fully protected against accidental mains contact.

Non-fused test leads are also acceptable for live circuit measurement at electronic PCB (Printed Circuit Board) level. In fact, their compactness and sharp tip measurements help to avoid the danger of

bridging PCB tracks.

Again you would want the confidence that your measuring instrument - probably a DMM (Digital Multimeter) was correctly fuse protected against accidental mains contact.

Non-fused test leads should never be used where measurement of electrical systems, including high

energy mains connecting strips, are involved.

Fused Test Leads

In March 1988 The Health and Safety executive (HSE) introduced a recommendation document GS38 for electricians test leads.

There is no doubt the adoption of the GS38 fused test lead recommendation in the UK has saved many lives

and just as importantly many more serious burns injuries.

The first fused test lead recommendations were adopted from an Electricity Supply Industry test lead requirement (M15/4) so many fused test leads tend to follow the

old fashioned and time consuming method of screw-in connections between croc clip and probe functions.

The new Socket & See ÔOne ClickÕ system totally overcomes the tedious (and sometimes unsafe)

screw-in system and we feel it will make a major contribution to the safety of electricians test leads.

Fused test leads should always be used where measurement of mains supply takes place - this includes anything from mains connecting strips to bus bars.

When loop testing fused test leads should always be used.
